By which I mean fuuuuck this is going to be one hell of an essay.
Malik is in the brotherhood! This is awesome since Shaun's real support has been the Assassins ever since things went down. If there weren't any assassins here I'm not sure how he'd be handling things and the "oh fuck I hate this place" stage.
And god, does he hate this place. Malik's both helping and harming with that. On one hand it's someone he knows and to some degree approved of, even if he only knows him from the tapes they've watched. Onnn the other Malik is making him feel like he's not that much of an Assassin. Shaun just feels like he's failing in about every way possible, and considering that's been how he's been identifying himself, that leads to a bundle of issues that he's reluctant to bring up. Reasons for that involve things like a) the opinion that having Feelings around Malik is like dumping a chunk of meat right next to a shark and b) Shaun's not the most open about his feelings right away. Generally it takes time to get him to open up.
I don't think he really had a complex about not being born into the order, but how things have gone with Malik make him worry. Of course he's an Assassin, he's fully trained and been with them for two years, what else could he be? That sort of thing. Malik messes with that, but he's also someone he likes besides all of that. In short, jesus we need to app characters that don't need a translator for our fail.
