Desmond's really an odd case, but most people only get it when they fully become an Assassin.

Oh he is, but there's different ranks, everything from novice to a full assassin. The ranks and the benefits differ from area to area, but one thing remains certain, unless something disrupts the brotherhood, the blade's only given out to people who truly know how to use it.

Are there different ranks of novice? Where are you?

It depends on the group, in Malik's time the main difference was between novice and Assassin, in Ezio's brotherhood the ranks were more solid, as for us, well rank is a bit fuzzy these days, no thanks to the fall of most of the core of it. These days it's more experiance and who tells you what to do that determines rank. Desmond first came in and really needed to learn it all, and there are others above us, and we all answered...
