This is the university and this is Riario's estate, where I am staying. Over here is the Medici estate. Now, the area on the other side of the river is what most concerns us. Imagine it is crossed with narrow streets all the way up to this church, which is where I shall be ceasing my layout. This is all Franciscan territory, of course. This (*he taps the table*) is where the memory you saw began. Angelo and I crossed at this bridge and walked this way. The first confrontation took place here and the second (*he is drawing his finger along the table, tracing their path*), here.

How narrow are they? And how populated are they?

They vary. Some are... they appear a bit less so than the modern streets I have seen. Others, the side ones especially can get very narrow so that only two people would be able to walk them abreast. As for population, I cannot give you a complete answer. The area nearer to the church is densely populated, so is the stretch alongside the river. There are patches of abandoned houses.

If they're gathering near the church, is it only during the time when food is handed out? or all the time?

People stay in the area. But you are right, there are only so many people so near when they are offered scraps.

Then you'll need to put out supplies when most of them are at the church, and vary the deliveries. Take a few of the narrow streets, people will avoid them because of the risk, so send a few through there and if the risk's not that bad. The wider ones should be used if it's starting to look bad or they're not populated.

You'll need to get a few to learn all the side roads and catch how the people move about, if possible get one of the local sort and take him on as a guide and to teach the group. If you're worried about the security, find someone without a family and hire them on at the house in the mean time.

Knowing the roads is no problem. I know them passingly well--and I have those who are better acquainted with them. That last idea might work well. I'll be certain to look into it when I return to Pisa. I doubt I will be able to find anyone on such short notice but I should be able to arrange for it to take place. He'll need near constant supervision, however, which may...

No. Never mind. I know how to work around it.

I may be able to set something more stable and self-regulating in place, but I will not know until I see how things have progressed in my absence. Or, rather, in the time I have no information on.

Depending on what has happened with the rebuilding of the factory, I might be able to organize additional aid through those I have working there. I should also get in touch with Niccolò; he may be able to help me set something up with either the Medici estate or, perhaps, using the funds and holdings of the Franciscans themselves without bringing my name into the open.

We are acquaintances, yes. He is attending the university as well and is employed by the Medici family.

Oh, we're hardly friends. He is certainly talented, but I am still annoyed that he tricked me.

He is very intelligent, very ingenious. He got the better of me on more than one occasion although we only met briefly. I can see why I will later hire him in my military campaign.
